A Few Random Thoughts

1. American cops : donuts :: Peruvian policia : churros.

2. Under the impression that only large vehicles with 18 wheels or more give a warning sound when going in reverse? Think again. Here in Peru, the taxis (which are everywhere) emit a strange tune that sounds like it came from the very first generation of cell phones to advise nearby cars and passersby that they're reversing. I wish I could record the sound and post it here, but the best I can do is describe it. It sounds like rejected hero theme music from a Nintendo Entertainment System, and I do mean the original NES. It has that electronic, buzzing, one-pitchy-note-at-a-time quality that old video game music does. And it goes on for a long time! You think the tune is going to repeat, but it launches into a second movement.

3. French fries (papas fritas, I should say) : Peruvian meals :: rice : Asian meals. You can't escape it, and when you request 1/4 chicken to go without the fries they look at you like you asked for 1/4 moose with horns or something.

4. This is how I deal with teaching little kids who can't reach the top of the whiteboard.
